Thanksgiving conspiracies
I’m ready for a vacation (I’ll be gone the next four days!) so I thought I’d spread some knowledge about the original THANKSGIVING and some of it’s conspiracies.
- Most hold that the original Thanksgiving was held at the Plymouth Plantation in 1641, however the earliest Thanksgiving was likely held in 1565 at Saint Augustine, Florida.
- US Continental Congress enacted a Thanksgiving observance into the constitution. Due to its religious undertones (the thanking of God) some objected to the involvement of the government. Thus in 1798 it was left to the states to decide if and how to observe Thanksgiving.
- On Oct. 3, 1863 during the Civil War, President Lincoln declared a national day of Thanksgiving be observed on Thursday, Nov. 26. Every president after followed suit.
- Thanksgiving was originally celebrated on the last Thursday of November. However President Roosevelt attempted to move it to the third Thursday in an effort to boost the economy (Christmas shopping always began after Thanksgiving). After some dispute with Congress and other states FDR issued a proclamation in 1942 designating the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday isn’t always the last Thursday).
